RESPONSIBILITIES
A Field technician in the Transaction/Closure Department is responsible for understanding, maintaining and training on equipment related to investigating the nature and extent of contamination and/or developing and implementing cleanup and closure activities. Work is performed with direction from Staff personnel, Project Managers, and/or Senior Managers; under the general supervision of a Department Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform and train on field tasks
· Understand proper procedures and be able to perform all field tasks necessary to complete a project’s scope of work. Activities include, but are not limited to, (Investigation) advance soil borings, obtain and field screen soil samples; install, develop, and sample monitoring wells; complete geologic and aquifer studies; prepare samples for the laboratory; perform soil-gas surveys; perform excavation zone assessments; and perform record searches; (Cleanup) install and operate product recovery systems; perform pilot tests to support remedial system design; conduct remedial system installation and operation; maintain, coordinate, and oversee tank removals; and decontaminate manufacturing facilities.
· Identify potential sources of contamination when working on a job site.
· Identify changes to the scope of the work, discuss with August Mack project manager and onsite client, and execute changes orders (if necessary).
· Supervise subcontractors and communicate with onsite clients and regulators.
· Prepare a Health and Safety Plan (HASP) for each project and review and enforce the plan with all persons at the work site.
· Document all field activities being performed in a field log including reporting on field techniques, locations of the work, and any relevant field observations.
· Train employees on various field activities including the proper calibration, use, and maintenance of field equipment.
· Conduct surveying, GPS mapping and plans and drawings using CAD.
Equipment Maintenance
· Maintain inventory of field equipment by tracking usage and ordering equipment when necessary.
· Service and maintain field meters.
· Gather equipment for field projects and load trucks.
· Track equipment used by job numbers; bill equipment to proper job number.
· Calibrate Gastech, HNu, and miniray meters on a daily basis; send in for maintenance as required.
· Work with Field Staff to ensure field instrumentation is cleaned and decontaminated upon return.
· Schedule job specific assignments of field equipment and enforce policy.
Project Maintenance
· Shop for supplies as needed on a project basis.
· Deliver supplies and equipment to job sites as requested.
Vehicle Maintenance
· Ensure that vehicles are in good, safe operating condition.
· Ensure that trucks are equipped with properly operating fire extinguisher, eye wash bottle, first aid kit, and blood borne pathogens spill cleanup kit.
· Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, small repairs); coordinate on large repairs and maintenance.
· Wash and clean trucks every two weeks.
· Track usage and ensure that trucks are properly signed out on log and mileage is billed to proper job number.
· Communicate internally to secure work necessary to maintain a billable goal of 64 hours per 80 hour pay period (80% productivity).
Knowledge of:
· The proper calibration, use and maintenance of field equipment.
· The proper field logging of Geologic lithology, field screening samples and groundwater monitoring well installation and sampling.
· Gathering information and preparing site plans and related drawings.
· Hazards inherent to the environmental work and related safety measures.
Skilled in:
· Calibrating and using various types of field equipment.
· Note taking and documentation of field activities.
· Training and monitoring employees on proper field techniques.
· Gathering geologic and hydrogeologic information.
· Surveying, GPS and CAD
Ability to:
· Learn and teach job-related material primarily through verbal instruction, training, reading, researching and observation in an on-the-job setting.
· Document and organize while working on multiple projects.
· Accurately measure and document distances using a tape measure or other measuring device.
· Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
· Work in small, cramped areas.
· Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces to access equipment.
· Climb ladders or steps where equipment is located, to reach objects on shelves, or to monitor machinery and equipment.
· Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
· Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to make adjustments to equipment.
· Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
· Work closely and support others in a team environment.
Additional Requirements:
This classification requires the use of a personal or company vehicle on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Requires 2 years of experience in mechanical skills and environmental field work plus a high school equivalency. Strong computer, organization, and verbal communication skills are a must. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
