August Mack has an immediate opening for an entry level field position (Geologist, Engineer, Scientist, or Chemist) in its’ Lancaster, Pennsylvania office. RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for learning and performing various aspects of field work related to Phase I environmental site assessment activities; investigating the nature and extent of contamination and/or developing and implementing cleanup and closure activities; and environmental compliance, construction management, and health & safety compliance necessary to complete a project’s scope of work. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
· Assessment - identify environmental and health and safety concerns at a parcel of real estate or industrial facility; file review and record searches; prepare reports documenting environmental concerns; and formulate recommendations for corrective action.
· Investigation - advance soil borings, obtain and field-screen soil samples; install, develop, and sample monitoring wells; complete geologic and aquifer studies; prepare samples for the laboratory; perform soil-gas surveys; perform excavation zone assessments; and perform record searches.
· Cleanup - install and operate product recovery systems; perform pilot tests to support remedial system design; conduct remedial system installation and operation; maintain, coordinate, and oversee tank removals; and decontaminate manufacturing facilities.
· Compliance - supervise the construction of engineering controls; prepare permit applications and plans; formulate recommendations for environmental compliance; audit facility operations; design and install various environmental systems (e.g., ventilation, storm water, industrial wastewater); and develop and implement Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasure (SPCC) and storm water plans. Some positions involve industrial hygiene hazard assessment and process safety management.
· Identify potential sources of contamination when working on a job site.
· Identify changes to the scope of work and execute change orders (if necessary).
· Perform regulatory and technical research as needed to support a project.
· Supervise subcontractors and communicate with onsite clients and regulators.
· Prepare a Health and Safety Plan (HASP) for each project and review and enforce the plan with all persons at the work site.
· Document all field activities being performed in a field log including reporting on field techniques, locations of the work, and any relevant field observations.
· Write the field portion of the final report.
· Prepare items such as boring logs or well construction diagrams, site plans, photo logs, etc.
This classification requires the use of a personal or company vehicle on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, have an acceptable driving record, and receive medical clearance from a baseline physical.
EXPERIENCE Requires a bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Industrial Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a related degree. Strong computer and verbal/written communication skills are a must. 40-hour OSHA Hazwoper Certification is a plus. Field personnel must possess a valid driver's license, have an acceptable driving record, and receive a medical clearance from a baseline physical.
